Based upon a children's book by William Steig, Shrek was animated at PDI in Palo Alto, California. Viewpoint® DataLabs International, Inc. was selected by PDI as the primary provider of 3D modeling and digitizing services for Shrek. This announcement built on the successful multi-year collaboration between Viewpoint and PDI for Antz during which Viewpoint created richly detailed 3D digital characters and environments for the critically acclaimed, computer-animated box office smash from PDI and DreamWorks. Antz was one of the most extensive modeling and digitizing projects undertaken by Viewpoint for a feature film, and a great example of what can be achieved when the talents of two organizations effectively combine to form a cooperative team, said Walter Noot, vice president of production for Viewpoint. For Shrek we built upon the proven business, technical and communications processes put in place for Antz, enabling our teams to immediately focus on the special creative and production processes required for Shrek. In addition, since PDI is continually at the forefront of developing leading-edge character animation technology, Viewpoint and PDI will be able to jointly design new ways of modeling 3D NURBS characters and environments for Shrek.
The latest agreement between PDI and Viewpoint focused specifically on the creation of numerous 3D characters and environments for Shrek. Like Antz, the Shrek project called for collaborative technical and art direction, on-site Viewpoint modelers at PDI, digital data transmission to facilitate project reviews, and a local producer at Viewpoint to oversee the multi-year project and ensure high quality results and predictable delivery dates. With this agreement, we are extending the modeling alliance we established with Viewpoint for Antz and accelerating the trend toward collaborative studio production, said Carl Rosendahl, chairman of PDI. Viewpoint has demonstrated the unique ability to synchronize its creative, production and communications processes with PDI's. This relationship allows PDI to focus on advancing our award-winning character and facial animation systems while Viewpoint similarly advances its expertise in the creation of high-quality 3D digital content. PDI and Viewpoint have a long history of working together on high-profile 3D animation projects for the entertainment industry, including the feature films Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, and The Arribal, and many television commercials and programs.
After a 30 second test athat Katzenberg hated, a green light was given to a skeleton crew that produced a piece eight times longer, at ten times the quality, with one tenth the manpower, in 15% of the time.
Dreamworks started negotiations with large-formatn film vendor, IMAX, in regards to producing a giant-screen 3-D version for IMAX 3D theaters. Finally, the film was only distributed to "normal" theaters.
Pacific Data Images promoted Jane Hartwell to associate producer of Shrek. Previously, Hartwell was Senior Production Manager on Shrek and Production Manager on the first of PDI's animated features, Antz. Her expanded responsibilities included involvement in creative, technical and financial aspects of the production. Hartwell was also responsible for the creation of the overall schedule for Shrek and oversees the story, character, lighting, effects and technical director departments. Her expertise was crucial to the production of Antz and that will be increasing dramatically on Shrek, stated the film's producer Aron Warner. A native of the Bay Area, Hartwell was previously an associate production manager at Skellington on James And The Giant Peach.
Arnauld Lamorlette, 34, formerly vice president and director of R&D at the Paris-based studio Buf Compagnie, was hired by PDI to join its visual effects team. Lamorlette was named a Senior Visual Effects Developer on Shrek. Aron Warner, Shrek producer, said, He has been brought on to PDI's team to oversee the creation of computer-generated human characters and the rich organic world they will inhabit in Shrek. Arnauld will be instrumental in developing new animation systems and unique technical applications. As vice president of Buf Compagnie, Lamorlette was involved in the production of the company's film projects including The City of Lost Children and Batman & Robin. Lamorlette also contributed to Buf Compagnie's commercial spots for such clients as Coca-Cola, Michelin, Loreal, Perrier, Reebok, Ford and Hewlett-Packard, as well as music video projects for Bjork and The Rolling Stones.
