Comments: Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, this film follows Jim’s journey across a parallel universe as cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon. Befriended by the ship’s charismatic cyborg (part man, part machine) cook John Silver, Jim blossoms under his guidance, and shows the makings of a fine spacer as he and the alien crew battle supernovas, black holes and ferocious space storms. But even greater dangers lie ahead when Jim discovers that his trusted friend Silver is actually a scheming pirate with mutiny in mind. Confronted with a betrayal that cuts deep into his soul, Jim is transformed from boy to man as he finds the strength to face down the mutineers and discovers a “treasure” greater than he had ever imagined.

Ron Clements and John Musker have been wanting to do this movie for a long time. It was their next project after Aladdin, but they were required to do another movie (Hercules) before they could get involved in such a personal project.

The directors wanted Sean Connery to do the voice of the main space pirate Long John Silver, but finally Brian Murray was assigned the role.

Andy Gaskill, who also worked as art director with John and Ron in Hercules, has worked his vision on the character designs and conceptual art for this animated feature.

Production on the film started on June 1999, but soon the movie had to be rewritten because of its similarities with Fox's Titan A.E.

What could be cooler than alien pirates? I'll tell you what...Alien Pirate Ships! I've seen them, man, and they are cool. You think people at the Studio are jazzed over Atlantis? Ha! Atlantis is cool, but Treasure planet has tons more cool creatures/characters/scenes. Andy Gaskill's design work so far is amazing.

Johnny Rzeznik (The Goo Goo Dolls) will make his solo debut with a pair of songs he is writing for the movie. Rzeznik tells that taking on the task for this project has forced him to think differently about the songwriting process.
That was a real challenge, because I didn't want it to be completely, you know, I didn't want to write, like, one of those Disney songs, you know what I mean? So I wanted to try to have at least a little more edge and rock to it, he explains. And it's cool because I actually get to sing it. You know, like, I'm the voice of this 15-year-old kid who's a punk, basically.
Rzeznik says his own youth spent listening to artists like the Clash, Elvis Costello, Sex Pistols, Kiss, and Cheap Trick proved good inspiration. I kinda dialed in to his character, because the kid is a lot like that, he says. It's cool, it's another chance to get dressed up.
